Attilio Mazzilli

I’ve always had a soft spot for technology, since when I was a junior M&A and Private Equity lawyer. In my 20-plus-year career, I’ve advised standout technology companies and their founders in all stages of their life cycle, as well as venture capital firms in their investments in Italy and Europe. I am a strategic partner to companies and private equity funds in their most relevant business transactions. I am also the proud leader of an amazing team of enthusiastic Italian tech lawyers.

Clients I've worked with: Atempo | HAT Technology & Innovation | Kreos Capital | Safety21 | Scalapay | ShopCircle

I leverage my diverse background as a general counsel, operator, and angel investor to provide practical, business-oriented guidance to high-growth companies and VCs and offer invaluable insights on corporate governance, venture capital transactions and employment matters, among other critical areas. As employee #2 at a venture-backed startup I have first-hand experience wrestling with and solving some of biggest challenges startups face from defining and executing business strategies, navigating customer and vendor relationships to the basic blocking and tackling of setting up payroll and accounting functions.

      • What inspired you to become an emerging companies and venture capital lawyer?

My dad co-founded the first cloud data storage company during the dot-com boom. I had a front-row seat as he and his team developed and launched what was at the time a game-changing technology, pitched VCs and institutional customers to take a leap of faith to store critical data on the internet and took the company public back in 2000. Witnessing the highs and lows of willing a new business into existence was exciting and I knew I wanted to play a part in this process. I'm far from the best coder in the world, but it turns out I'm pretty good at this lawyer thing and really enjoy helping founders navigate the legal intricacies of starting and scaling a company.

        • Tell us something we'd be surprised to know about you.

I'm an open book, so unlikely to be many surprises. However, I do some of my best drafting - big headphones on, heavy metal loud(!) and when I'm not drafting investment documents, I'm either powerlifting or riding with my Harley group (not quite a gang).

        • What technology are you most excited to see develop?

AI - the practical applications are immense ... and its incredibly useful at writing bios!

        • What is your ideal weekend?

Miles upon miles on the back of a Harley in California.

        • What's the best advice you've ever received?

"If it were easy, everyone would do it."

        • What's your mantra?

"I'm going to do today what other people aren't willing to, so I can do tomorrow what other people cant."
