2016年の国際収支速報によると、日本からの米国向け直接投資は5兆7268億円で前年に比べ5.6%増えており、今年も日本企業の活発な対米投資が見込まれています。米国内でも特に製造業が集中し、技術と地理的な優位性が高いインディアナ州は、米国でのビジネスを展開する上で優れた地域のトップにランクされており、長年にわたって、日本の大手自動車メーカーを含む、260社以上の日本企業が同州で事業を展開しています。今回は米国インディアナ州政府駐日代表事務所、駐日代表、ポール・F・ローランド氏を講師に迎え、インディアナ 州を投資先に選出することの利点などについて解説いただき、当事務所からは対米国投資戦略の立案及び留意事項、米国雇用法対策、及び知的財産の保護と訴訟対策などについて、各分野に詳しい日米の弁護士が解説いたします。

David Case Partner Intellectual Property, Complex Litigation & Dispute Resolution


David Case is an experienced intellectual property and commercial disputes lawyer in Orrick’s Tokyo office. His experience in Japan and New York includes a variety of intellectual property and information technology contentious and non-contentious matters on behalf of Japanese and non-Japanese clients.

In connection with his contentious work, David has assisted with or been lead counsel in numerous litigations and arbitrations venued in the United States and Japan involving intellectual property infringement claims or commercial claims involving intellectual property rights. David also regularly supports Orrick’s M&A and venture start-up teams in respect of intellectual property and information technology aspects of cross border M&A and venture capital deals.

Hiroki Sugita Partner M&A and Private Equity, Technology Companies Group


Hiroki Sugita is a partner in Orrick’s Tokyo Office and a member of the M&A and Private Equity Group. He works on a wide range of cross-border transactions including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, emerging companies and venture capital transactions, and private equity investment especially in Japan, the United States, Europe and Asia.

He also has extensive experience in fund formation, real estate and various types of finance transactions.

Hiroki has a deep understanding of clients’ needs from his secondment experience with a U.S. investment bank in 2005 and a Japanese major trading house from 2012 to 2014.

Prior to joining Orrick, Hiroki worked at O’Melveny’s Tokyo office as a counsel where he mainly worked on cross border M&A.

He is recommended in various publications and rankings including Corporate and M&A in The Legal 500 Asia Pacific (2015).

Yumiko Ohta Partner Employment Law & Litigation, Executive Compensation


Yumiko Ohta, partner in the Orrick's Tokyo office, is a member of the Employment Law Group. Ms. Ohta focuses mainly on employment law advice as well as various corporate transactions including compliance, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, joint venture, litigation and general corporate transactions.

Yumiko also has international trade expertise in areas such as customs rules and export controls.

Before joining Orrick, Ms. Ohta was an associate at Tanabe & Partners and advised clients in corporate transactions and employment law as well as represented clients in civil and family cases. Also, she has experience serving as an outside auditor for Japanese corporations. Prior to practicing law, she worked at Mitsubishi Corporation for seven years. While there, she was involved in LNG projects and other global business.

Anri Nakamoto Associate Intellectual Property, Patents


Anri Nakamoto is an associate in Orrick's Tokyo office and a member of the Intellectual Property Group.

His practice focuses on representing Japanese companies in patent litigation, trade secret litigation and other intellectual property disputes. Anri also counsels clients on patent portfolio management, intellectual property strategy developments, adversarial patent licensing negotiations, and other IP related matters in cross-border M&A and strategic business and technology alliances.

Prior to joining Orrick, Anri worked for more than 10 years at Hitachi Ltd., Panasonic Corporation, and IP Bridge Inc., a Japanese sovereign patent fund management company, where he gained hands-on experience in patent prosecutions, sales and purchase transactions of patent portfolios, adversarial patent licensing negotiations and litigation.
