Litigation Daily Recognizes Pro Bono Effort Blocking Campaign to Interfere with Voting Rights in General Election

November.02.2020

American Lawyer’s Litigation Daily has recognized an Orrick pro bono team for their efforts shutting down a political robocall campaign in numerous states that targeted black voters in an attempt to discourage them from participating in the presidential election.

The publication named us runners-up for Litigators of the Week in this feature, which also recognized our co-counsel with the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Siding with our arguments for a temporary restraining order, a New York federal judge last week issued a strongly-worded ruling calling the operation “electoral terror” and halting the calls in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero also took the extraordinary step of ordering the political operatives behind the robocall campaign to push out thousands of corrective calls to all the voters targeted.

The Orrick team was led by partner Amy Walsh, Pro Bono Counsel Rene Kathawala and associate Rachelle Navarro, who argued the motion for a temporary restraining order. The Orrick team also included associates Julie Gorchkova, Spencer Bruck, Aaron Gold and Michael Maruca. The case is part of our extensive pro bono work across the country in support of voting rights and racial and social justice.
