Orrick’s Global Japan Practice is hosting a series of “Orrick Library” seminars to explore legal issues in various fields in Japan as well as the United States, Asia and Europe. The next seminar will be held on Wednesday, November 29 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am. George Rigo, a partner in our Paris Office, will join us in Tokyo for this event.
With several important measures announced by President Macron already being adopted and implemented and changes in labor law and significant tax measures pending, the changes in the French administration will most likely have a big impact on investment in France. This seminar will focus on the numerous reforms being carried out in France and how it will influence Japanese clients. It will also touch upon the recent M&A trends of Japanese companies acquiring French companies and how the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), to go into force in May of next year, will influence M&A and investments in France, including so called "Compliance Due Diligence".

George Rigo est avocat en fusions-acquisitions au sein du bureau parisien d’Orrick. Spécialisé en droit des sociétés, il conseille des groupes industriels et holdings de l’énergie, de l’agroalimentaire, de l’industrie automobile et des services. Il intervient principalement dans le cadre de leurs fusions, acquisitions et joint-ventures, en Europe et en Asie, mais également sur le financement de ces opérations et leurs restructurations.
George dispose d’une expérience dans le secteur des énergies renouvelables, il accompagne les acteurs clés du marché et les conseille dans le cadre de projets majeurs en France. George intervient en financement et acquisition de parcs éoliens et de projets solaires, dernièrement il a conseillé 123 Ventures, Impax, Nord LB et EOS Holding sur diverses transactions.
George possède une expérience des transactions transfrontalières imposante. Il accompagne ses clients sur toutes les phases d’une opération, de la négociation et la rédaction de contrats et partenariats commerciaux internationaux à la gestion des éventuels litiges liés à la mise en œuvre de ces accords. Récemment, il a conseillé Biostime, un industriel chinois spécialisé dans la nutrition et les produits pédiatriques et coté sur la bourse de Hong Kong, dans le cadre de la signature d’un accord de coopération industrielle et commerciale avec une coopérative laitière française.
Avant de rejoindre Orrick, George Rigo exerçait au sein du cabinet Watson, Farley & Williams. Il a également travaillé chez Fidal Peat International Paris et au sein du bureau parisien de Proskauer Rose.

Mark Weeks is a Senior Counsel in Orrick’s M&A and Private Equity Group. He has practiced in New York and Tokyo for more than 30 years and served as office leader of Orrick’s Tokyo office from 2007 to 2017.
He concentrates his practice on mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, clean technology, life sciences, IT and telecommunications asset transfers, strategic investments, and general corporate representation for U.S., Japanese and other Asian companies.
Mark speaks, reads and writes fluent Japanese.
Tokyo
Hiroki Sugita is a partner in Orrick’s Tokyo Office and a member of the M&A and Private Equity Group. He works on a wide range of cross-border transactions including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, emerging companies and venture capital transactions, and private equity investment especially in Japan, the United States, Europe and Asia.
He also has extensive experience in fund formation, real estate and various types of finance transactions.
Hiroki has a deep understanding of clients’ needs from his secondment experience with a U.S. investment bank in 2005 and a Japanese major trading house from 2012 to 2014.
Prior to joining Orrick, Hiroki worked at O’Melveny’s Tokyo office as a counsel where he mainly worked on cross border M&A.
