Fresh Dog Food in Europe: Butternut Box Raises £280m

Butternut Box, the UK-based fresh dog food company, has raised £280m in a financing round from new investor General Atlantic. Existing investor L Catterton also participated in the round.

Orrick advised Butternut Box.

THE COMPANY

Co-founded by Kevin Glynn and David Nolan in 2016, Butternut Box makes and delivers high-quality, fresh dog food to customers in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium – and most recently Poland, following Butternut Box’s April acquisition of PsiBufet, a Polish company offering individually tailored fresh food for dogs.

Orrick has advised Butternut Box – certified as a B Corporation in 2022 – on a variety of topics since its seed round in 2017.

THE IMPACT

With the additional financing, Butternut Box plans to accelerate its leadership position across the “fresh” category in the pet food aisle through further European expansion. This includes developing a second manufacturing facility, giving the company visibility and control over its emissions production. This further underlines the company’s commitment to creating a positive impact across all areas of its business, as evidenced by receiving B Corp accreditation in September 2022.

THE TEAM

Jamie Moore led the Orrick team that advised Butternut Box with the assistance of Stephen Tallon, Rachel Leigh, Alexander Smith, Rachel Conder, Kristy Hart, Siddharth Balani, Elizabeth Gavin, Jason Wu, Anna Humphrey, Natalie Brown, David Walder, Jonathan Rosen, James Larkin, Scott Morrison, Daniel Jones, Natasha Ahmed, James Connor, Alex Sobolev, Deepa Vekaria and Anna O'Kelly.
