Daily Journal Names Alyssa Caridis and Lynne Hermle Top Women Lawyers of 2023

The publication recognized employment partner Lynne Hermle as one of its Top Women Lawyers in California for the eighth time and named partner Alyssa Caridis for the first time.
In this feature (subscription required), the Daily Journal noted that Alyssa has become co-leader of the firm’s IP litigation practice “after only six years as partner,” and also that she guided our move to a new downtown Los Angeles office when she was head of Orrick’s LA office. The publication cited Alyssa’s prominent work, including her key role on a team representing Sonos in global patent infringement litigation against Google.
Lynne was featured in this (subscription required) article, described by the Daily Journal as being “highly regarded for a decade as the litigator companies in Silicon Valley and across the country want defending them when they have to go to trial against ex-employees.” Lynne has successfully represented a string of high-profile companies in recent years, including Goldman Sachs, Carta, Spacex, Microsoft and Twitter.

Alyssa handles complex patent and copyright litigation, open source licensing and IP counseling. She has represented companies in all stages of litigation — from pre-suit investigation, through trial, and on to appeals courts. She draws upon her engineering degree from Harvey Mudd College to engage with technical professionals and quickly grasp new technologies. Alyssa has represented clients in connection with a broad spectrum of technologies, ranging from CMOS image sensors and communication systems to software and peripheral computer components to projects in both the aerospace and automotive industries.

On behalf of Sonos, Orrick was recognized for securing a summary judgment on a key patent claim in the federal court case against Google.
Also for Sonos, our team secured a win in a patent infringement jury trial against Google. Jurors found that Google smart speakers and media players infringed one of the two patents Sonos was asserting at trial and awarded the company a $2.30 royalty on more than 14 million units for a total of more than $32.5 million in damages.
Orrick defended Zynga in patent ligation brought by gambling technology company IGT. In what was initially a six-patent case that was whittled down pre-trial, jurors in Austin, Texas found that Zynga’s casino slot games, including Game of Thrones and Hit it Rich, didn’t infringe IGT’s last patent standing. What’s more, jurors found IGT’s patent was invalid due to obviousness.

Alyssa calls Southern California home, but remains loyal to the sports teams of her Bay Area childhood.

Lynne has significant experience successfully defending complex discrimination and wage-and-hour class actions for global leaders in the retail and technology sectors including Microsoft, Twitter, The Gap, Genentech, Sears, Burlington Coat Factory, Gymboree, Spencer’s Gifts, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Williams Sonoma and Pottery Barn Kids, among many others.

Lynne led the trial team that obtained a complete defense verdict for Kleiner Perkins in Pao v. Kleiner Perkins, the high-stakes gender discrimination and retaliation case that garnered intense international media scrutiny. In naming Lynne “Litigator of the Week” for this victory, American Lawyer described her effective voir dire and how she “steadily poked holes in Pao’s testimony.” The Recorder called Lynne’s cross-examination “masterful” and Bloomberg reported that her “charismatic, intimidating oratory made her the trial’s breakout star.”

Following Pao, Lynne secured a complete defense verdict for SpaceX in an $8 million gender discrimination and retaliation suit. The Daily Journal called the outcome “another triumph for Hermle,” observing that her “string of successes for tech clients fighting off gender harassment and discrimination claims got longer.” The publication also pronounced Lynne to be “arguably the most feared employment defense attorney in California.” Eight months later she followed that up with another jury defense verdict for SpaceX in a wrongful discharge and retaliation case.

In recognition of these successes and her high-profile career trial work, Lynne was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2017. She is a fellow in the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and many other trial related organizations.
