A cross-border team advised global triathlon leader IRONMAN in its acquisition of Lagardère Sports’ endurance division, which includes world-class races in eight countries across three continents. With this transaction, IRONMAN will now own and/or operate an additional five International Triathlon Union (ITU) events, four marathons and six cycling races, as well as a number of other participation events, all of which are expected to serve an estimated 140,000 participants this year.
The purchase of Hamburg-based Lagardère Sports from Paris-based Lagardère Sports and Entertainment will represent the largest acquisition ever for IRONMAN, which is based in Tampa, Florida. The acquisition will also solidify IRONMAN’s dominance of top triathlons at both the long-course and short-course distances.
IRONMAN is a longtime client of Thomas Schmid, who joined Orrick in Munich in November 2015.
