Julie Totten, who leads Orrick’s Global Employment Law and Litigation Practice Group, built her reputation by helping companies prevent and resolve their most challenging litigation and compliance issues in the employment law arena.
In doing so, Julie closely collaborates with each client, gathering an in-depth understanding of their specific tensions, challenges and objectives. Legal 500 noted she "truly understands corporate politics and works with in-house counsel to understand the intersections of legal advice and business objectives." Julie then draws upon nearly three decades of experience to guide clients towards the best possible resolution. Her client-focused approach is one of many reasons she was selected to lead Orrick’s global employment practice, which Chambers ranks as one of the country’s foremost practices and describes Julie as “a big thinker and a thought leader.”
Julie handles complex wage-and-hour class and collective actions, complex pay equity and promotion matters and discrimination and retaliation litigation. She also guides clients through sensitive investigations, as well as government agency audits and litigation. Julie is proactive in helping clients avoid litigation by assisting them with the development of policies and practices designed to minimize exposure.
Julie is honored to be a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment and a member of the American Employment Law Council. She also serves as a Council Member of the American Bar Association Labor and Employment Law Section.
Stephanie helps clients navigate the intricate and rapidly evolving world of employment litigation.
Clients feel at ease knowing that Stephanie will work tirelessly to guide them through wage-and-hour class and representative actions, as well as single-plaintiff litigation involving claims of whistleblower retaliation, fraudulent inducement and breach of contract. Companies, particularly those in employee-friendly states such as California, must contend with an ever-changing array of procedural tools and laws, and rely on Stephanie to serve as a trusted advisor. In addition to legal nuances, the high-profile matters Stephanie handles are further complicated by reputational risk. To deliver a clear path through these complexities, Stephanie works with her team to carefully and creatively balance each case’s dangers, opportunities and impact.
She has managed matters from start to finish and has litigated cases in federal and state courts, as well as before various administrative agencies. She also helps her clients avoid litigation by counseling on wage-and-hour compliance, terminations and severance agreements, non-compete and non-solicitation covenants and employee handbook provisions.
Jessica James, an attorney in the Sacramento office, has experience in defending a broad range of employment issues, including claims of harassment, wrongful discharge, misclassification and systemic discrimination investigations.
Jessica's practice involves employment litigation on a variety of legal issues, including defense of class action and single-plaintiff claims of discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination, misclassification, and other wage-and-hour violations. She also has experience in defending and advising industry leaders regarding pay equity and compensation analysis in response to civil litigation, OFCCP and EEOC investigations, and other claims of systemic discrimination.
Jessica regularly counsel clients on a variety of employment-related issues, including human resources policies and procedures, separation agreements, employee termination, and compliance with various state and federal regulations, including the Equal Pay Act (EPA), Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN). As part of her counseling role, she frequently conducts training programs for her clients, including trainings on sexual harassment and discrimination prevention. Jessica also has significant experience conducting internal investigations in response to claims of misconduct.
Jessica's experience also includes business litigation on issues beyond the employment context, relating to white collar criminal defense, corporate investigations, and complex commercial litigation.
Prior to joining Orrick, Jessica served for two years as a judicial clerk for the Nevada Supreme Court. She earned her J.D. from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, where she was Editor-in-Chief of the McGeorge Law Review and graduated Order of the Coif. She also served as a judicial extern for the California Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District.
Alex Guerra, an Associate in the Sacramento Office, is a member of the Employment Law & Litigation Group.
Alex focuses her practice on employment litigation and counseling. Alex defends employers in class action, multi-plaintiff, and single
plaintiff lawsuits on a variety of issues, including discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination, misclassification,
and wage-and-hour claims. Orrick's Employment Law & Litigation group was recently named Labor & Employment Department of the Year in California by The Recorder in recognition of their significant wins on behalf of leading multinational companies on today's most complex and challenging employment law matters.
Before joining Orrick, Alex was active in California politics. She helped manage presidential, congressional, and supervisorial campaigns and held leadership positions within the youth arm of a major political party. Alex also interned for high-ranking members of the legislature, to include the Majority Whip of the California State Assembly and the President pro Tempore of the California State Senate. These experiences put Alex in a position to understand the complexity of California’s employment laws and the varied interests motivating these policies.
