Working Together to Make an Impact Around the World
Giving back inspires us.
From California to Beijing, Paris to Dusseldorf, our lawyers and staff work together to make a positive impact on our local communities. We do this through Orrick Cares, our award-winning community responsibility program.
We encourage every team member to take one extra day of paid time off each year to volunteer for an Orrick Cares activity, community event or nonprofit. Some reflect longstanding partnerships with local community organizations, while others are new initiatives launched by members of our team with the firm’s support. Below are some of the ways we make a difference in our communities.
Pandemic Relief
Recognizing the pandemic would bring a worldwide hunger crisis, we launched a campaign to support local food banks in each of our local markets. Together, we donated more than $135,000 to COVID-19 hunger relief, supporting 69 food banks and organizations in 22 cities globally.
Community Giving
We raise money together for causes in our local communities through our Change for Charity initiative – an idea from an associate in our London office. Last year we supported more than 20 organizations globally, including food banks, educational nonprofits, children’s advocacy efforts, animal shelters and Doctors Without Borders.
Election Day
We closed our U.S. offices on Election Day to ensure everyone was able to vote – and to encourage our team members to use it as a day of service. We shared non-partisan volunteer opportunities, and dozens of our team members served across the country. We also dedicated more than 8,000 pro bono hours to voter protection projects.
Pride in Wheeling
Our Wheeling team has implemented several inspiring community projects, including creating and organizing an annual citywide cleanup event called Pride in Wheeling to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues and promote inclusivity in the city.
Rebuilding Together
Our San Francisco and Silicon Valley teams have partnered with Rebuilding Together to renovate numerous homes and facilities throughout the Bay Area over the past two decades.
Disaster Relief
Team Orrick raised more than $100,000 in 2020 for disaster relief following devastating wildfires in California and repeat hurricanes along the Gulf Coast. We distributed the funds to the American Red Cross and more than 35 other worthy organizations members of our team identified.
Helping Kids Learn
We have long-standing partnerships with schools in underserved communities, from Harlem’s Storefront Academy to Sacramento’s Oak Ridge Elementary School and San Francisco’s Bessie Carmichael Elementary School.
Honoring Those Who Serve
Our Los Angeles team and Wheeling teams have volunteered to assemble care packages for deployed U.S. troops, first responders, veterans, military families, and wounded heroes and their caregivers.
Feeding the Hungry
Our San Francisco and Houston teams both take part in local Food From the Bar campaigns, and our Washington, D.C. team has long partnered with Bread for the City to support its Holiday Helpings campaign.
Running for a Cause
Orrick team members have laced up for races to benefit worthy causes around the world, including running to raise money for breast cancer research (Paris) and to end economic inequality (London).
Coastal Cleanup
Each year, our Bay Area teams and their families and friends volunteer to clean up Ocean Beach as part of California Coastal Cleanup Day, organized by the California Coastal Commission.
