Orrick congratulates Jim Pooley, senior counsel on our Intellectual Property and Trade Secrets Litigation teams in Silicon Valley, on being selected by Managing IP as a lifetime achievement award winner at its 2017 North America Awards dinner. The event, held March 23rd in Washington, D.C., honored the exceptional intellectual property law firms, cases, and individuals of the past year.
The award is the latest in Jim’s distinguished career as a pioneer in intellectual property law in Silicon Valley. Last year, Jim was the only American to be inducted into the 2016 class of the IP Hall of Fame, and in February he was once again selected to appear in Intellectual Asset Management’s “IAM Strategy 300 list”, a recognition of the world’s leading IP strategists. In addition to being a first-chair IP trial counsel and strategic advisor in high-stakes patent and trade secrets disputes for more than three decades, Jim has held leadership roles in several national organizations, including president of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and chairman of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
In 2009, the White House appointed Jim Deputy Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization, an agency of the United Nations, where he served for five years as director of the international patent system. He subsequently was the driving force behind the Defend Trade Secrets Act, which Congress enacted in 2016.
