Law360 has named Orrick partner Jeremy Kudon an MVP in the Sports & Betting category, citing his pioneering work securing legislation in states around the country legalizing sports wagering. It is the second time Jeremy has been recognized as an MVP.
In this feature, the publication specifically cited Jeremy's work this past year on behalf of MLB, the NBA, PGA and fantasy sports industry shaping legislation in states such as Illinois and Michigan, which enacted a sports betting law expected to serve as a model for other states. "That was a complete package, and I think is a model for almost every other state going forward," Jeremy told Law360. "The bill has something for everyone."
In the interview, Jeremy, head of Orrick's Public Policy practice, described navigating the COVID-19 crisis as this year's biggest challenge, as states paused consideration of sports betting legislation. Jeremy also told the publication he envisioned being a sports law attorney as a young boy, when he realized he "wasn't going to be playing for the Yankees."
Jeremy's advice to junior attorneys is to be patient and add value to clients. Asked what motivates him now, Jeremy replied: "I'm by nature competitive, and I love the opportunity to craft a strategy, execute that strategy and see how it works out," he said. "The challenge of passing legislation is a thrill and something I enjoy doing every day of the week."
