Congratulations to associate Max Carter-Oberstone on his appointment to the San Francisco Police Commission.
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously confirmed Max to the seven-member commission after he was nominated by Mayor London Breed. Max has been serving this year as one of Orrick’s inaugural Racial, Social and Economic Justice fellows, embedded full time with the NYU Law Policing Project to develop innovative solutions in policing issues. He was sworn in on Nov. 19.
“Max’s experience advancing criminal justice reform efforts and community policing comes at a critical time for public safety in our city, and I’m proud to have nominated him to the Police Commission,” said Mayor Breed. “I am confident that his experience growing up in San Francisco and advocating for our diverse communities will help to continue pushing forward the work of this commission while ensuring that all San Franciscans feel safe and represented.”
Max, an associate in our Supreme Court & Appellate practice, has been working with the Policing Project to advance initiatives to build front-end accountability through legislation and litigation. His work included drafting model legislation to curtail pretextual traffic stops and the decertification of officers who commit misconduct.
“It is an incredible honor to serve my home City and to work on issues at the heart of our collective future,” Max said. “San Francisco has made significant improvements to its policing policies. I look forward to building on that foundation and working with my fellow commissioners to implement policies that advance our shared values, democratic accountability and equal justice under the law.”
