Orrick held its fourth annual technology conference “Global Innovation Conference: Practical Guidance in IP, Antitrust, Trade, and Business for Taiwanese Companies” in Taipei and Hsinchu on 10 and 11 April. The two-day conference focused on the latest trends, developments, and advice for Taiwanese companies in a wide range of topics related to intellectual property, licensing, antitrust, arbitration, international trade and corporate issues.

The conference attracted nearly 300 participants who represented a number of Taiwan-based and multinational tech companies. These included Acer, ASUSTeK Computer, AU Optronics, Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Compal Electronics, Delta Electronics, Epistar Corporation, Foxconn Interconnect Technology, General Motors, HTC, IBM, Leader Electronics, MediaTek, Phison Electronics, SHL Group, Silicon Motion, TSMC, TPK Touch Solution, ViewSonic, and Winbond Electronics. Representatives from the Chinese National Federation of Industries, Ministry of Economic Affairs Taiwan, Institute for Information Industry of Taiwan, and Taiwan Technology Industry Legal Officers Association also attended.

Various topics and key trends were addressed in the conference, including recent developments in U.S. patent litigation, SEPs and FRAND licensing and enforcement, proving obviousness in IPRs, FRAND arbitrations, trial insights and likely implications of FTC v. Qualcomm, practice pointers for IPRs and how to achieve results in the Federal Circuit, legal implication of artificial intelligence, U.S.-China trade war on sanctions, CFIUS and tariffs, multijurisdictional strategies for antitrust, and legal and business issues that arise in cross-border M&A deals and investments. Attendees were also invited to attend interactive town hall discussions where guests had the opportunity to meet our speakers and network with other attendees in a small group environment.

The conference featured leaders from Orrick’s global IP, M&A, Supreme Court & Appellate, International Trade & Compliance, and Antitrust teams, including partner Robert Benson, leader of the firm’s Taipei office; partner Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, co-chair of the firm’s IPR practice; partner Jay Jurata, chair of the firm’s antitrust and competition group; partner Prof. Siegfried Elsing from the International Arbitration Group; partner Mark Davies from the Supreme Court and Appellate Group; Harry Clark, chair of the firm's International Trade and Compliance practice; and partner Mark Lehmkuhler from the M&A and Private Equity Group; and Taipei-based of counsel Dr. Hsiwen Lo.

The conference once again reflects Orrick’s commitment to the Taiwan market and the firm’s global capabilities in IP, international trade, antitrust, dispute resolution and corporate practices, which counsel clients on all aspects of complex commercial legal issues in Taiwan, Greater China, Japan, Europe and the U.S.
