Celebrating Black History Month 2021

February.26.2021

As part of our celebration of Black History Month in the United States, the Black Lawyers of Orrick and our DEI Committee hosted Congresswoman Terri Sewell, who represents Alabama’s 7th District, for a virtual fireside chat. In a conversation with Orrick partners Eugene Clark-Herrera and Amy Walsh, Congresswoman Sewell shared why she has devoted her life to driving meaningful change and protecting the constitutional right to vote.

In the video, Congresswoman Sewell speaks about growing up in Selma, Alabama, the impact of “Bloody Sunday” on voting rights, the disparate impact COVID-19 has had on Black and underserved communities, the importance of mentoring “people who don’t look like you,” and her efforts to pass new voting rights legislation named for her mentor, the late Congressman John Lewis.
