“Never Backing Down”: American Lawyer Honors Orrick as Finalists for 2023 National and IP Litigation Departments of the Year and Litigator of the Year

  • American Lawyer named our firm among the top seven finalists for litigation department of the year nationally, under the headline: “Orrick’s Litigation Team Doesn’t Back Down and Opponents Know It.”
  • “Orrick showed its ability to take the toughest cases to trial and step in when clients weren't finding success with other firms,” the publication observed.
  • Our partner Will Stute was also featured as a national Litigator of the Year finalist for his “incredible victories for the NCAA” in a string of trial wins. The publication highlighted Will in this story.
  • No other litigation team was a finalist in both the Litigation and IP categories – and none is on all three of these lists. The Recorder also named us a finalist this year for California Tech Industry Litigation Department of the Year.
  • Wins across disciplines contributed to these results, including trials and appeals in courtrooms across the country in financial services, tech, life sciences and AI matters involving patent, copyright, product liability/mass torts, contracts, securities, pay equity, employment and privacy claims, as well as pro bono matters.
  • “The diversity of our success speaks to our trial culture,” partner Rich Jacobsen, head of our financial services litigation platform, told the publication. “Clients hire us because they know we will take cases to trial when others might not—and that reputation has also enabled us to achieve settlements that are extraordinarily favorable to our clients. And we’re just getting started. I forecast a lot of growth for this team over the next few years.”
  • The publication cited our record of courtroom wins for a “who’s who of technology” clients. Said partner Alyssa Caridis, co-head of our IP litigation practice, “Nothing excites our teams more than doing a deep dive on our client’s technology and then telling the story of their innovation in court.”
  • We also were recognized for major appellate wins for clients ranging from Gilead and Johnson & Johnson to Credit Suisse. “One of our greatest strengths is winning cases when the odds are stacked against us,” said partner Josh Rosenkranz, head of our Supreme Court and Appellate practice.
