7 Years as a Fortune Best Place to Work

For the seventh year in a row, Fortune has named Orrick as one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” – ranking the firm No. 13 this year and the top law firm on the list. This is the second time Orrick has ranked among the top 15 workplaces in the United States.

“Talent retention is the No. 1 challenge facing the legal profession,” said Orrick Chairman Mitch Zuklie. “Thinking differently about legal careers will be absolutely essential. To deliver the highest quality client service, we need to make work inspiring and sustainable, and that’s about more than compensation wars. We’re grateful to our teams for voting us to the Fortune list for the 7th year – yet, we recognize there’s more to do as we adapt to the hybrid workplace.”

Over the past year, Orrick has added several new approaches to the way we work and support our lawyers and staff.

  • We became the first law firm to make it truly possible to unplug. As part of our “Unplug Time” policy, we expect all team members (partners, associates and staff) to take one week fully unplugged each year. We give lawyers 40 hours of creditable time to make sure that happens, and we designate “unplug time” buddies to support each other by providing coverage – this allows us to ensure client needs are met and vacations are not disrupted by work.
  • We launched the Orrick Racial Justice Fellowship Program – and then committed to continuing it through 2024 based on the year-one impact. Five Orrick Fellows, all experienced lawyers, will work full time each year at leading organizations dedicated to civil rights, criminal justice reform, social justice and economic equity.
  • We introduced Modern Health, a platform that provides free mental health services through coaching and counseling, including one-on-one and group sessions. Orrick team members and their family members each get 10 sessions a year at no cost, regardless of medical plan enrollment. We also gave everyone at Orrick a premium subscription to the Calm app to support mindfulness, stress management and good sleep.
