Orrick Leads Taiwan IP and Business Conference for Multinational Tech Companies

April.24.2017

For the second consecutive year, Orrick partnered with the National Chiao Tung University School of Law to host two day-long conferences in Taiwan focusing on the latest trends and developments in U.S. IP litigation, licensing, and business issues important to Taiwanese companies, such as antitrust, supply chains, trade secrets, technology investments, and regulatory compliance.  The events, held in Taipei and Hsinchu, featured commentary from experts in IP, M&A, antitrust, and international trade, as well as two of the leading economists and damages experts in the U.S.

The seminar drew approximately 400 participants from Taiwan-based and multinational tech companies. The conference attendees represented hundreds of different entities, such as Acer, AU Optronics, ASUSTek Computer, AVC, Chicony Power, Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Compal Electronics, Corning Display Technologies, Delta Electronics, Epistar, Foxconn, HannStar Display, Himax Technologies, HiTi Digital, HTC, IBM, InnoLux, Lite-On Technology, MediaTek, MiTac, MSI, Powerchip Technology, Quanta Computer, Sercomm, Silicon Motion Technology, TSMC, TPK Touch Solutions, UMC, ViewSonic and Wistron.

The program addressed numerous topics, including current developments in U.S. patent law, litigation, and licensing; antitrust issues in competitor collaborations and avoiding antitrust issues in licensing transactions; structuring transactions and supply chains to minimize risks; IP strategies including patent, trade secret, and copyright protection; IP issues in acquisitions of U.S. businesses; and U.S. investment and trade challenges for Taiwanese companies.  The conferences concluded with two workshops on issues related to calculating and negotiating royalties in licensing discussions and determining damages in patent litigation.

The seminars featured leaders from Orrick’s global IP, M&A, and antitrust teams, including partner Denise Mingrone, head of the firm’s IP practice group; partner Robert Benson, leader of the firm’s Taipei office; partner Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, co-chair of the firm’s IPR practice; partner Harry Clark, chair of the firm’s international trade and regulatory compliance practice; partner Richard Smith, a leader in the firm’s corporate and M&A practice; of counsel Dr. Hsiwen Lo, who is resident in the Taipei office; and of counsel Howard Ullman from the firm’s antitrust group. Also speaking were Dr. Alan Cox, the Chair of NERA Economic Consulting’s IP Practice, and Chris Bakewell, the Leader of the IP Services Practice at Duff & Phelps.

The seminars reflect Orrick’s commitment to the Taiwan market and the global reach of the firm’s IP and corporate practices, which counsel clients on all aspects of IP and commercial legal issues in Taiwan, Greater China, Japan, Europe and the U.S.  In 2016, The American Lawyer selected Orrick as its IP Litigation Department of the Year, China Law & Practice selected Orrick as International IP Firm of the Year, and the Financial Times named Orrick the Most Innovative North American Law Firm.
