Orrick Orange County

Orrick is hosting a midday reception for Dive/In Day on October 29, 2019 in Irvine, CA. The event will feature:

A discussion with Sandra Robbie, Emmy-winning writer/producer of the documentary Mendez vs. Westminster: For All the Children / Para Todos los Niños, about the 1947 landmark Orange County school desegregation case. After the screening, Sandra will lead participants in a discussion on the importance of this civil rights case, its connection to Brown v. Board of Education, civil rights issues that impact all of us today, and how our connectivity helps elevate us as a culture, a society and as individual teams. Lunch and MCLE will be provided.

If you are unable to join for the full event, we invite you to watch the documentary in advance of our date and hope that you will be able to join us for the discussion beginning at 12:00 p.m.

Sandra Robbie is the Emmy-winning writer/producer of the PBS documentary Mendez vs. Westminster: For All the Children / Para Todos los Niños. Sandra grew up in Westminster and considers the promotion and celebration of Mendez to be her life's work. Through Sandra's efforts, Mendez has been honored at the White House, commemorated on a U.S. postage stamp, is featured in the Los Angeles Museum of Tolerance and her film has been screened at Harvard, Stanford, the Smithsonian and hundreds of presentations across the United States.

Inspired by Mendez v. Westminster, Sandra has curated a historic tour in Old Towne Orange where folks can see the last standing Mexican School from the segregation era, a formerly segregated swimming pool and movie theater, as well the graves of Confederate and Union soldiers in Orange County. Her first traveling exhibit, The US Bus, will launch in summer 2020. Sandra is also producing a social justice comedy showcase entitled "Sandra Robbie's Lady Parts" which will debut in OC in fall 2019 and include the topics of Mendez v. Westminster, LGBTQ and #MeToo. She aims to take this one-woman show on tour across America.

Khai LeQuang パートナー

オレンジ・カウンティ

Khai LeQuang represents financial institutions, technology companies, and other public and private companies in complex, high-stakes commercial disputes at both trial and appellate levels. He has won trials in state and federal courts, and is a prominent practitioner in the area of life settlements. Clients and judges praise Khai for his trial skills, strategic thinking, and innovative and practical solutions to complex legal problems.

Most recently, Khai second-chaired a trial team that successfully defended Union Carbide Corporation, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company, in an asbestos product liability action involving novel claims for fraud and civil conspiracy. Following a trial that lasted more than two months, the jury returned a defense verdict on all claims against Union Carbide, continuing a string of victories for the company.  Khai continues to represent Union Carbide as national trial counsel, trying cases and developing strategies for hundreds of product liability actions across the country.

Khai also recently first-chaired a two-week bench trial in an action against a school district arising out of its allocation of $417 million in bond funds. The plaintiffs, led by a taxpayer association, sought $90 million for construction of a new school. After navigating a year-long political imbroglio and defeating plaintiffs’ summary judgment motions following a defense that Judge Pressman described as “brilliantly argued,” the case proceeded to a trial that resulted in a decision in favor of the district on all claims. The case is now on appeal.
