About Us

Orrick serves the Technology & Innovation, Energy & Infrastructure, Finance and Life Sciences & HealthTech sectors globally. Clients worldwide call on our teams for seamless transactional execution, winning litigation strategies and forward-looking regulatory solutions. We offer particular strength in helping innovators address opportunities and risks arising from the convergence of tech with finance, energy and life sciences. And we aim to bring distinctive quality, teamwork and value to the table – and innovate in everything we do.

Sector Focus

Half of our work globally is for the technology sector. Our clients include 4,000+ venture-backed companies, more than 100 unicorns and 13 of the 25 largest public tech companies. We offer comprehensive solutions for every stage in a tech company’s growth – including private and public company transactions, IP protection, high-stakes litigation, cybersecurity, privacy, and consumer finance and other regulation and enforcement. We’ve been top 5 globally for venture capital for the past five years, including No. 1 in Europe (PitchBook, 2022), with particular strength in fintech, energytech, healthtech, AI and SAAS.

Our Energy & Infrastructure practice covers the full energy spectrum, with distinctive strengths in renewables, energy transition, energytech, corporate power purchase agreements and infrastructure modernization – in global markets from Houston to London to Singapore. We act for the largest global sponsors and developers, new market entrants, banks, funds, government entities and leading corporates. We rank No. 3 globally for renewables transactions (Inspiratia, 2022) and Chambers USA recognizes us as Band 1 in Energy Transition, Renewable Energy and Power. We have helped the infrastructure markets innovate and modernize, ranking No. 2 for infrastructure globally (Inspiratia, 2022) and Chambers Band 1 for P3 transactions in the USA. And Law360 has named us a Project Finance Group of the Year eight times.

Fourteen of the Global 20 banks rely on our teams, as do funds, more than 700 fintechs and other lenders. Dating back to our work on the financing of California’s Golden Gate Bridge, we have dominated the U.S. public finance markets. We bring technical excellence and creativity to the securitization, private credit, restructuring and real estate markets. Law360 named our team Banking Practice Group of 2022, with a particular focus on a string of “market moving” courtroom wins. We offer a market-leading financial services and fintech regulatory and enforcement practice with our combination with Buckley in February 2023.

Trial and Appellate Firepower

Long a litigation powerhouse, we were named a finalist for 2023 National and IP Litigation Departments of the Year by American Lawyer – the only firm named in both categories. Wins across disciplines contributed to these results, including trials and appeals in courtrooms across the United States in financial services, tech, life sciences and AI matters involving patent, copyright, product liability/mass torts, contracts, securities, pay equity, employment and privacy claims, as well as pro bono matters. As The American Lawyer wrote: “High-intensity headline cases didn’t faze Orrick’s litigators.” Our Supreme Court & Appellate team is one of the nation’s elite practices and has been named to the National Law Journal’s Appellate Hot List 11 times. We have been named Employment Group of the Year by Law360 five times. Chambers USA ranks our team Band 1 for IP Appellate Law, Privacy & Data Security Litigation and Product Liability & Mass Torts.

Navigating Regulatory Uncertainty

Regulatory and enforcement uncertainty is the No. 1 concern our clients identify. Our Strategic Advisory & Government Enforcement practice delivers synthesized solutions drawing on diverse perspectives to help clients navigate enforcement issues and put proactive compliance programs in place. Chambers USA ranks our team Band 1 for Privacy & Data Security, Consumer Finance Compliance and Corporate Crime & Investigations.

Innovation as a Matter of Both Quality and Value

Opportunities to innovate inspire us, and we’ve been a top 3 most innovative law firm in North America by Financial Times for eight consecutive years, and a two-time Most Digital Law Firm in North America – recognizing the creativity of both our advice and service delivery. We were the first U.S.-based law firm to establish a global insourcing center in 2002. Today, we are focused on leveraging data, technology, people and processes to enhance both quality and value. We invest in legaltech to give our clients and our people an early view into emerging technologies (and we share our view of the market through The Observatory). Orrick Labs, our internal skunkworks, develops solutions we cannot find in the market. And we are deploying AI and other tools to enable our teams to focus on adding strategic value.

Inspiring Talent

Delivering exceptional legal counsel requires us to attract, retain, train and inspire exceptional teams. Our focus on talent has earned us a spot on Fortune's list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For nine years in a row. To ensure we bring the best thinking to our firm management, we’ve created one of the most inclusive leadership teams of any firm, including a Board and Management Committee that is 50% diverse. Our associate model gives our team unsurpassed career agency, including accelerated advancement – in fact, Yale Law Women has named us the Top Firm for Agency & Flexibility two years in a row (2022 and 2023). We embraced flexible working long before the pandemic and have led the legal market in our parental leave policies and mental health programs, including through real opportunities to unplug, reflect and recover.

Strengthening Our Communities

Making a social impact matters to our team – over 99 percent of our lawyers exceeded the 20-hour pro bono standard last year. American Lawyer has ranked us top 5 for pro bono for six years. The Orrick Racial Justice Fellowship Program enables five experienced lawyers to devote a year embedded with community partners working to address racial, social and economic justice.

A Long-Term Perspective

We are fortunate to have inherited the core values of excellence, teamwork, perseverance and innovation – going back 150+ years to our firm’s roots in California’s Gold Rush era. This history informs the long-term perspective we bring to our client advice. We’re equally grateful to work with the most innovative companies worldwide, paving the way for a more globally integrated, technologically sophisticated future.
