Sten Jensen Senior Counsel

Sten routinely guides clients such as FUJIFILM and Panasonic through the minefields of the ITC. Sten also has long-standing relationships with attorneys in the ITC’s Office of Unfair Import Investigations, developed when he served on the Executive Committee of the ITC Trial Lawyers' Association. These matters involved issues such as government contractor immunity to patent infringement; the effect of amendments to a patent licensing agreement; the effect of an expired utility patent for a chemical composition on the validity of a related trademark for medical implants; the copyrightability of short phrases and the merger doctrine; the copyrightability and fair use of religious materials; and multiple oppositions to office actions, and petitions to cancel trademark registrations to the Trademark Trial & Appeal Board.

Daniel has also worked on Internet-related matters involving the legal effect of “browsewrap” agreements; violations of Web page terms of use; the circumvention of technological barriers to access Web pages; violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act; copyright issues related to cache copying of Web pages; the use of “spiders” to collect data from Web pages; the legality of “deep-linking” to web pages; and the legality of search engine aggregation and display of copyrighted Web pages.

Daniel has recently co-authored a scholarly article with Warrington S. Parker III entitled, "The Differing Approaches to Preemption Under the Uniform Trade Secrets Act" that was published in Volume 49, Issue 2 of the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Law Journal. Raghav Krishnapriyan Partner

Raghav has litigated a broad range of technology, life sciences, and trade secret cases through trial and appeal. In the life sciences space, he helped secure a $178 million patent infringement verdict for a Bay Area pharmaceutical client, was instrumental in obtaining a highly favorable settlement in a complex contract case involving CAR-T technology, and fended off IPRs filed against foundational fusion protein technology by biosimilar makers. In the technology space, his facility with both web programming and legal minutiae has resulted in victories in a bet-the-company trade secret litigation against a startup revolutionizing scientific research, summary judgment in an action against his client involving five widely-litigated web patents, and a judgment of patent invalidity under § 101 against seven patents. He has also litigated class actions and criminal cases that have a technology-related focus. He has assisted numerous emerging and venture-funded companies across industry sectors.

Raghav also maintains an active pro bono practice, representing asylum seekers and inmates seeking compassionate release.

Raghav holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of California, Davis, and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Amanda Lack Managing Associate

Amanda’s practice centers on all types of intellectual property matters including patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret litigation. Amanda also handles other civil litigation matters including commercial and contract-based disputes.

Amanda clerked for Chief Judge Mary H. Murguia of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and for Judge Arenda Wright Allen of the Eastern District of Virginia. During her tenure on the fast-paced “rocket docket,” Amanda assisted Judge Allen in all aspects of presiding over several jury trials and in managing her weighty civil docket. While clerking on the Ninth Circuit, Amanda was intimately involved in oral argument preparation, case strategy, and opinion drafting for both en banc and three-judge panel proceedings. Both clerkships give Amanda invaluable “behind the scenes” experience and an understanding of persuasive writing and argument techniques as well as the mechanics of judicial decision making. Amanda uses these insights and her ability to quickly identify the tipping point of complex cases to clearly and concisely draft the most compelling argument on behalf of her clients.

Prior to clerking, Amanda was previously an associate at another national law firm, where she handled commercial, appellate, and intellectual property matters. She also served as a PILI Fellow at the National Immigrant Justice Center while studying for the bar examination.

During law school, Amanda served as the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Law and Policy and her student note—(Il)Legal Violence at the Border: A Comparative Analysis of LGBTQ+ Asylum Claims in the United States and Europe—was published in the same. She also earned a Certificate in Public Interest Law and authored the top-ranked Respondent’s brief in the Wiley Rutledge Moot Court Competition.

Amanda is deeply committed to pro bono work. She has successfully represented several asylum seekers from around the world as well as incarcerated individuals alleging civil rights violations.

Jason Lang Partner

Silicon Valley

Mr. Lang has litigated cases before district courts, state courts, and the International Trade Commission. He has an extensive practice in patent office proceedings, including ex parte reexaminations and inter partes reviews. He has been a top-filer in inter partes reviews. Recent matters include work with memories (DRAM, Flash and hard drives), semiconductor tools, semiconductor packaging, and design software.

His counseling work includes developing defensive and offensive intellectual property strategies in view of potential competitor litigation. He also assists clients in indemnity disputes, product launches, patent acquisition, licensing and portfolio management.

Before focusing on intellectual property litigation and counseling, Mr. Lang spent a year working for the District Attorney’s Office in Atlanta, Georgia, where he had considerable exposure to numerous trials.

Mr. Lang’s public service commitments include steady work for housing clinics. Mr. Lang recently first-chaired a four-day trial, led a successful mediation, and obtained a favorable settlement for clients of different local clinics.

Cynthia Larsen Partner

She has handled appellate matters in the U.S. Supreme Court, various federal appellate courts and in the California Supreme Court and appellate courts. She is a veteran trial attorney and has applied her experience as a former U.S. Department of Justice trial attorney to serving corporate and governmental clients. She recently served for five years as the partner-in-charge of Orrick’s Sacramento office. She also served for several years as head of Orrick’s Litigation Training Program and as vice-chair of the firm’s Litigation Division.

Before joining Orrick, Cynthia was an attorney at Condon & Forsyth in Washington, D.C. from 1982 to 1985. Prior to that, she was a trial attorney in the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., where she served in the Honors Program and specialized in civil trial work. Representative cases handled by Cynthia on behalf of the United States include: Sweet v. United States, 528 F.Supp. 1068 (D.S.D. 1081), aff’d, 687 F.2d 246 (8th Cir. 1982) (trial counsel); Pike v. United States, 652 F.2d 31 (9th Cir. 1981) (trial and appellate counsel); Gaspard v. United States, 544 F.Supp. 55 (E.D.La. 1982); Marek v. United States, 639 F.2d 1164 (5th Cir. 1981) (trial counsel).

Cynthia frequently writes and lectures on litigation topics. She serves as a pro tem settlement conference judge for the Sacramento Superior Court and as a federal court mediator.

In addition to being admitted in California, Cynthia is also admitted in Idaho (inactive) and the District of Columbia (inactive).

Betsy Lee Partner

Previously, Betsy served as a Law Clerk at the National Center For Youth Law (Oakland). Prior to law school, she also worked as an Investigator with the New York City Department of Education and as a Legal Assistant at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP (New York).

Jonathan Liu Managing Associate

Jonathan graduated magna cum laude from Santa Clara University School of Law. While in law school, Jonathan was production editor for the Santa Clara High Tech Law Journal and externed at the Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office. Jonathan also served as research assistant for Professor Colleen Chien researching patent law statistics and second chance legislation.

Prior to law school, Jonathan was trained as an analytical chemist receiving a Bachelors degree from the University of Illinois: Urbana-Champaign and a Master's degree from the University of San Francisco. For his Master's thesis, Jonathan synthesized and developed a silica nano-particle analysis platform that can be used to easily detect metal contaminants in water.

John Lu Partner

Primary Focus & Experience

Dr. Lu’s practice focuses on patent, trade secrets, and life sciences litigation. He has represented clients in matters involving patent infringement, U.S.-China trade secret misappropriation, biosimilars, ANDA litigation, and licensing disputes. He also represents clients in connection with proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. His clients have included Genentech, Tris Pharma, Rosenberger, and Natera.

Recognition & Accomplishments

Dr. Lu has been on the editorial advisory board for Law360 Life Science publications and was named to Benchmark Litigation’s “40 and Under Hot List,” which honors the achievements of the nation’s most accomplished litigators under 40. He was also named to the Southern California Rising Stars list by Super Lawyers.

Dr. Lu has authored a number of publications, including: “Thryv: opposing policies in the Supreme Court,” World Intellectual Property Review (June 5, 2020); “The Growth of Online Universities: How to Solve the Accreditation Dilemma, Protect Students, and Expand Access to Higher Education,” a chapter in “Education and Social Media: Toward a Digital Future,” MIT Press (2016); “Senate Gridlock Causes En Banc Uncertainty,” and “Intellectual Property Special Report,” The Recorder (July 15, 2013); and “Promotion and Market Share in the Proton Pump Inhibitor Market: A Case Study,” Journal of Pharmaceutical Marketing & Management, Volume 17, Issue 3, 39-59 (2007).

Dr. Lu is the chair of the board of directors for Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center (APADRC), a nonprofit organization. He was also a Fellow of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity.

Prior to private practice, Dr. Lu was a law clerk to the Honorable William Alsup of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Dr. Lu received his J.D. from Yale Law School, where he was Notes Editor of the Yale Law Journal and Executive Editor of the Yale Journal of Law & Technology. While in law school, he was an extern for the Honorable John T. Noonan of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and an intern for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut.

Prior to law school, Dr. Lu earned his Doctor of Pharmacy, with highest distinction, from the University of North Carolina, and worked in pharmaceutical marketing.

Catherine Y. Lui Partner

Cathy also engages in complex commercial litigation including employee mobility, breach of contract, and fraud cases. Her matters are often high-profile and industry-changing. Cathy's practice also includes trade secrets investigations as well as counseling on joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, third-party vendor relationships, and emerging technology to help minimize the risk to companies. Cathy has significant experience in actions arising from the Defend Trade Secrets Act (DTSA), which created the first federal civil misappropriation of trade secrets claim in May 2016. Cathy has helped shape DTSA law on behalf of her clients through her involvement in some of the earliest DTSA litigation. Many of her trade secrets cases involve parallel criminal proceedings.

For her achievements, Legal 500 recognized Cathy as a "Leading Lawyer" in trade secrets in 2024. The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association also honored Cathy as a 2019 Best Lawyer Under 40. This annual list recognizes individuals within the APA community who have achieved prominence or distinction in their field and demonstrated a strong commitment to the APA community or civic affairs.

Cathy also regularly speaks and writes about trade secrets issues. She previously served as the Co-Vice Chair of the Trade Secrets Interest Group of the California Lawyers Association's (formerly of the California State Bar) Intellectual Property Section and she writes an annual column about trade secret hot topics in the CLA's "New Matter" publication.

Cathy is very active within the firm and her community. Cathy previously served as the Hiring Partner for the San Francisco office. Orrick selected Cathy to serve as the firm's 2020 Fellow for the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity, and Cathy previously served as the Co-Chair of the Asian American Bar Association's Judiciary Committee, which is focused on increasing representation on the bench.

Cathy also maintains an active pro bono practice. Cathy's dedication to pro bono service was demonstrated by her work in an asylum merits hearing representing a Salvadoran religious activist persecuted by gangs in El Salvador. For her work on this matter, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights honored Cathy with the Father Cuchulain Moriarity Award. In addition, the Justice & Diversity Center of the Bar Association of San Francisco recognized Cathy as an Outstanding Volunteer in Public Service in 2014 through 2020 for her work with helping homeless clients remove outstanding warrants barring them from access to housing and employment.

Jing Luo Senior Associate

Jing’s practice is primarily focused on patent and trade secret litigation. Her experience covers a broad range of technologies including small molecules (salts, polymorphs, formulations, and process patents) and biologic drugs, medical devices, diagnostics, software, and semiconductors.  She has worked on Hatch Waxman (ANDA) litigation as well as Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act (BPCIA) cases defending multi-billion-dollar diabetes and cancer drugs from generic/biosimilar challenges. Her clients have ranged from big pharmaceutical companies, to biotechnology companies, to pre-IPO startups, which uniquely positions her to counsel companies at all stages on portfolio strategy. Jing’s extensive background in biosciences, including years of laboratory research experience, serves her clients well in  high-stakes matters before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, U.S. District Courts, and Federal Circuit. Recently, Jing helped defend the validity of all challenged claims in a salt/polymorph patent in an IPR and was instrumental in developing parallel district court cases for a blockbuster diabetes drug.

Alongside her intellectual property practice, Jing has the privilege of using her Federal Circuit experience to represent veterans pro bono in their appeals to the court.

Prior to joining Orrick, Jing served as a judicial law clerk for Judge Raymond T. Chen at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and was an associate at a Vault 100 litigation boutique in Washington, D.C. Before law school, Jing was a Marshall Scholar, and she pursued dual graduate degrees in biosciences and policy studies while conducting public policy research in the U.K. and the United States.
