Karsten has more than a dozen years' experience in all forms of dispute resolution acting as lead counsel and arbitrator for clients in the energy and infrastructure, finance and technology sectors.

Karsten represents clients in international arbitration under all the main arbitral institutions, including the ICC and DIS, frequently acts as sole and party-appointed arbitrator and also represents clients before national courts in Germany with experience in setting aside and enforcement actions.

As a former M&A transactional lawyer Karsten has solid grounding in pre-contractual and contractual negotiations and advises among others, energy producers and distributors, both traditional (oil and gas) and renewables (solar, wind) construction conglomerates, financial institutions, JVs and biotech companies.

    • Counsel to a steel producer in a cross-border dispute with regard to a coal supply agreement.
    • Involvement in a gas price revision arbitration under the ICC Rules.
    • Representing a U.S. company in numerous arbitrations regarding supply contracts in the solar business.
    • Counsel to a Dutch group in various DIS arbitrations with regard to supply agreements in the renewable energy sector.
    • Representing the insolvency receiver of AgfaPhoto GmbH in various arbitrations against the Belgium Agfa-Gevaert Group.
    • Counsel to an international shipyard in a construction dispute with regard to an offshore wind farm project.
    • Representing an international construction company in various arbitrations relating to an infrastructure project in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
    • Counsel to plant owner with regard to construction defects of the factory building.
    • Counsel to a tax advisor in a dispute relating to his departure from a firm of tax consultants.
    • Representing a DAX company in an arbitration with a former Brazilian joint venture partner.
    • Counsel to a former managing director of a German GmbH in the defense against claims raised by the insolvency receiver of that entity.
    • Serving as party-appointed arbitrator in a post M&A dispute under the DIS rules.
    • Representing an investor before the Court of Appeals Celle, against Porsche in a €200 million dispute with regard to press statements issued by Porsche to the capital markets during the attempt to take over VW.
    • Counsel to a listed Bio Tech company in a DIS arbitration with regard to a licensing agreement.
