Orrick's Global Japan Practice is hosting a series of "Orrick Library" events, both offline and online, to explore legal issues in various fields in Japan as well as the United States, Asia and Europe. The next webinar will be held on Thursday, January 28 from 9:00 am to 10:15 am.
While AI is becoming more competent everyday with companies in every sector trying to employ AI in their businesses, the advancement of AI and associated data usage have posed a multitude of legal and business issues of first impression.
Presented by Richard Martinelli, partner in our New York Office and Kei Kato, Law Clerk in the New York Office, this session will discuss recent developments and legal issues in AI and data usage with an emphasis on IP, and will offer practical tips for Japanese companies.

He has litigated patents at trial, before the ITC, and on appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Rich has counseled clients and rendered opinions on patent validity, infringement and freedom to use. He is a registered patent attorney with experience drafting patents and practicing before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Rich’s patent work has involved a wide range of technologies including image processing, 3d graphics, audio / video compression, computer hardware and software, e-commerce, network technologies, digital rights management and encryption.
Rich also helps companies address the novel litigation and transactional IP issues that arise when developing and working with AI and is a frequent lecturer on these topics.

Shinsuke Yakura Partner
Tokyo
His practice focuses on intellectual property, antitrust, product liability, medical and pharmaceutical, and other commercial disputes for both domestic and foreign companies. He actively engages in cross-border litigation and arbitration, and draws on his extensive knowledge and experience from various countries.
In regards to intellectual property, Shinsuke has represented numerous companies in patent infringement litigation involving a wide range of technologies related to electric devices and industrial machinery. He has also handled other IP-related issues such as trademark, copyright and right to publicity. He is a qualified patent attorney (Benrishi) in Japan.
Recently, he has been involved in business and legal issues related to artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and big data; he also acts as the Asia representative of Orrick’s Global AI Working Group.
Consistently providing strategic advice from a global perspective, he is also actively involved in bribery regulations including FCPA and UKBA, antitrust and competition law, cartel, fraud and compliance investigations.
He also advises in mergers and acquisitions, licensing and other transactional matters.
