Orrick held its third annual technology conference “Global Innovation Conference: Practical Guidance in IP, Antitrust, and Business for Taiwanese Companies” in Hsinchu and Taipei on 25 and 26 April. The conference focused on the latest global trends and developments in IP, antitrust, and investments in start-ups and joint ventures, with practical advice for Taiwanese companies. During the two-day conference, leading practitioners took an interdisciplinary and multijurisdictional approach to discuss legal issues related to licensing, Standard Essential Patents (SEP) enforcement, artificial intelligence (AI), and other critical business issues.

The conference attracted approximately 235 participants who represented a number of Taiwan-based and multinational tech companies. These included Acer, ASUSTeK Computer, AU Optronics, Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Delta Electronics, Elan Microelectronics Corp., Epistar Corporation, Foxconn Interconnect Technology, Giga-Byte Technology, HTC, Luxshare Precision Industry Co., MediaTek, Powerchip Technology, Realtek Semiconductor, Silicon Motion, Synopsys, and TPK Touch Solution. Representatives from the Chinese Nation Federation of Industries and Taiwan Technology Industry Legal Officers Association also attended.

Various topics and key trends were addressed in the conference, including recent developments in U.S. patent litigation, global developments in SEP licensing and enforcement, legal implications for AI, data protection in cloud computing, practice pointers for IPRs and the European patent system, multijurisdictional strategies for antitrust, and legal and business considerations for investing in startups and joint ventures in China, Europe and the U.S. Attendees were particularly drawn to the AI session and the keynote session on cloud computing and data protection presented by guest speaker Dr. Celeste Yang, Corporate Attorney of the Digital Crime Unit at Microsoft Taiwan.

The conference featured leaders from Orrick’s global IP, M&A, and antitrust teams, including partner Robert Benson, a leader of the firm’s Taipei office; partner Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, co-chair of the firm’s IPR practice; partners Jay Jurata and Douglas Lahnborg, leaders in the firm’s antitrust and competition group; partners Richard Smith and Betty Louie, leaders in the firm’s M&A and private equity group; Taipei-based of counsel Dr. Hsiwen Lo; and counsel Adam Lin from the firm’s technology companies group.

The conference reflects Orrick’s commitment to the Taiwan market and the firm’s global capabilities in IP and corporate practices, which counsel clients on all aspects of IP and commercial legal issues in Taiwan, Greater China, Japan, Europe and the U.S.
