Orrick congratulates senior associate Marc Shapiro on receiving NYU School of Law’s Public Service Award!
Marc ’03 was honored by Dean Trevor Morrison during NYU’s 2017 Public Service Benefit for his longstanding commitment to public service work, including helping to preserve the rights of death-sentence inmates across the United States and fighting abuse at juvenile detention facilities across New York. He also secured a landmark victory before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit on behalf of a trio of pro bono clients, including an 85-year-old nun, who were criminally convicted for conducting an anti-war protest at a nuclear facility in Tennessee. In addition, Marc has served on the NYC Bar Association’s Committee on Capital Punishment, which focuses on educating the general public and the legal community about issues related to capital punishment, as well as training lawyers and law students on how to effectively represent death row inmates.
Presented annually by NYU’s Public Interest Law Center (PILC), the Public Service Benefit raises money for PILC’s Summer Funding Program, which guarantees funding for all first- and second-year students who want to work in summer public interest legal positions. Also recognized at this year’s event were NYU alumna Alisa Wellek, who serves as executive director of the Immigrant Defense Project, and Washington Square Legal Services’ Bail Fund.
