Legal Analysis and Advocacy to Impact the Development of the Media Sector in Africa

April.15.2013

Through the Vance Center, we are beginning work on an exciting project that aims to impact the development of the media sector in Africa.  The project calls for a narrative memo forecasting legal issues that members of the Africa Media Initiative (“AMI”) might expect to arise as their media businesses confront the challenges and opportunities that digital media technology and practice present.  AMI is a pan-African program that seeks to strengthen the continent’s private and independent media sector from an owner and operator perspective in order to promote democratic governance, social development and economic growth.  Examples of the survey and analysis of legal issues that have arisen in the United States, Europe and elsewhere related to digital media might include: privacy issues arising from Facebook’s terms of use, prosecutorial requests for identification of Twitter users, and Google’s street-view mapping.

The team consists of New York managing intellectual property associate Joseph Sherinsky, San Francisco senior corporate associate Lynne Hirata, Silicon Valley emerging companies partner Stephanie Sharron, Silicon Valley emerging companies associate Jeffrey Nisbet, and Silicon Valley intellectual property associate Frances Cheever.
