As an IP attorney, Evan helps technology companies solve problems without clear solutions—problems that demand close examination and imaginative strategy.

Drawing on his education background in aeronautical engineering, computer science, economics, and international relations, Evan can translate the complex and constantly-evolving business realities of today’s technology companies into cohesive and powerful legal arguments. In his practice, Evan guides cutting-edge U.S. and European technology companies through patent, copyright, trademark, and trade secret matters, and counsels companies on emerging cybersecurity and data privacy issues. Evan’s clients specialize in machine learning, autonomous driving, integrated circuits, consumer electronics, e-commerce, and medical device technology.

In his pro bono practice, Evan represents domestic violence survivors and counsels an international NGO on environmental law issues.

Before joining Orrick, Evan clerked for Judge Ronald M. Whyte at the Northern District of California.

Evan graduated magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where he also served as Executive Articles Editor of the Hastings Science and Technology Law Review. While in law school, he was an extern for Judge Lucy H. Koh at the Northern District of California.

Outside of work, Evan enjoys competitive ski racing and endurance cycling.

    • Finjan v. Check Point – Evan currently represents Check Point in a multi-patent infringement matter involving network security software and hardware.
    • Couchbase v. Redis Labs - Evan currently represents Couchbase in a matter involving allegations of digital crimes, trade secret misappropriation, and unlawful solicitation of employees.
    • Confidential Client v. Goody Tickets – Evan successfully represented a ticket resale company in a trademark dispute in the U.S.
    • Lawrence Livermore National Labs – Evan represented Lawrence Livermore National Labs in several related patent cases involving foundational ophthalmic laser surgery technology. Obtained favorable outcome for client against several major pharmaceutical and medical device company defendants.
    • Lotes Co. v. Hon Hai Precision Industry – Evan successfully defended Hon Hai in a complex patent infringement and breach of contract matter involving CPU socket standards and technology.
    • Mentor Graphics Inc. v. Synopsys Inc. – Evan counseled Synopsys in patent litigation related to the ZeBu hardware emulator.
    • Umicore – Evan counseled Umicore in an ITC investigation involving lithium ion battery technology.
    • Gracenote – Evan represented Gracenote in a complex copyright and contract matter involving the use of metadata.
    • Cruise – Evan counseled Cruise in connection with Cruise’s $1B acquisition by General Motors, obtaining a favorable resolution for Cruise of a critical intellectual property dispute related to the acquisition.
