Maria is part of the International Trade & Investment team at Orrick. She advises clients on compliance with US  trade and economic sanctions and export controls, licensing matters, enforcement actions, and trade compliance policies and procedures. Maria counsels clients on foreign investment reviews, including matters before the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). Maria takes a lead on internal investigations, compliance audits, and submissions to government agencies. 

Maria's previous experience as a member of the Mergers and Acquisitions group is instrumental in her reviews of the trade aspects of various M&A and other cross-border transactions.  

Maria draws upon her experience in Washington, D.C., Moscow (Russia) and Almaty (Kazakhstan) to approach her work with a broad perspective on international trade-related and other matters. Prior to joining Orrick, Maria worked at the Office of the General Counsel of a multilateral development bank, handled tax and legal matters at one of the Big Four accounting firms, and oversaw the design and implementation of an export compliance program for an international development firm and a U.S. government contractor.

    • Representation of a fund managed by Hines, the largest U.S. office developer and manager, in an acquisition of a major Class A logistics park facility. Orrick also advised on the acquisition financing and prepayment of existing facilities on this complex transaction involving two purchasers, three sellers and four target companies, as well as three financing banks with unrelated financings.
    • Representation of an investor in Dauria, Russia’s first independent space/microsatellite company.
    • Representation of a European bank in an acquisition and restructuring of several U.S. shopping malls as part of its investment portfolio.
    • Representation of an investor in increasing its stake in a company investing in commercial properties in Ukraine and managed by Ukraine’s leading investment bank, in a transaction involving parties from multiple countries and concerning five commercial properties.
    • Representation of Sukhoi Civil Aircratl Company, the Russian civil aviation giant, in entering into framework agreements for the sale and lease of 30 Sukhoi SuperJet 100 aircraft, a fusion of Russia's famed aviation design with the latest systems from leading aerospace suppliers around the world, to CityJet, an Irish airline and SCAC’s first West European customer.
    • Representation of Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company in implementing the first residual value guarantee package for Sukhoi Superjets, starting with the six aircraft already delivered to CityJet, an Irish airline.
    • Assistance in representation of RUSNANO, Russia’s high-tech sovereign wealth fund, and nine other corporate and individual defendants, in connection with a claim brought in the Northern District of California by former shareholders of Nitol, a Russian plant manufacturing polysilicon (material used in solar panels).
    • Representation of Industrial Investors Group in a complex sale of FESCO (the Far-Eastern Shipping Company), a Russian publicly-traded company with over 180 subsidiaries in a variety of countries, to Summa Group, for an undisclosed price of over $1 billion.
    • Representation of a client in the sale of a major logistics park to an international retail group in an emerging market.
    • Representation of a Russian investor in the development of a complex cross-border project with respect to turning a European port into an urban area which included the construction of an outlet mall, hotels, etc.
