Ian helps renewable energy developers and purchasers navigate complex project development, financing, and regulatory challenges.

Ian is a member of Orrick's Energy and Infrastructure Group, which is recognized as Band 1 in Energy Transition and Band 1 in Renewable & Alternative Energy Projects by Chambers USA (2025). His clients include leading developers of solar, wind, energy storage, geothermal, and energy transmission projects. 

He advises clients across all stages of the project lifecycle, including on offtake agreements, debt and equity financings, project acquisitions and sales, and energy regulatory issues. His experience includes negotiating physical and virtual power purchase agreements, tolling agreements, REC and environmental attribute purchase agreements, revenue share agreements, and energy and capacity sales under WSPP, EEI, and ISDA frameworks. 

Ian's expertise spans the business, legal, technical, and  aspects of the energy transition--an engineer by training, he partnered with major companies and governments to navigate their climate and sustainability goals as a management consultant with the Boston Consulting Group prior to joining Orrick. As a law student, he helped develop innovative climate and energy policies at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and at the California Public Utilities Commission.

    • Negotiated long-term utility offtake agreements for the sale of energy and capacity from >450MW co-located solar/storage projects for a leading U.S. renewables developer. 
    • Represented project sponsor in preferred equity financing of 150 MW battery energy storage facility in ERCOT. 
    • Advised major U.S. technology company on agreement to purchase 1.5 million tons of carbon removal from community-based afforestation project in India.
    • Provided regulatory and commercial advice for >700MW geothermal facility. 
    • Supported investment firm through due diligence and the sale of a portfolio of solar projects in Colorado, New Mexico, and California.
    • Represented storage developer on tax equity financing of 100 MW battery energy storage facility in California. 
    • Negotiated multiple gigawatts of long-term CAISO resource adequacy purchase and sale agreements.
    • Advised western United States merchant transmission developer on commercial and regulatory matters.  
    • Represented Southern California solar and storage developer on innovative offtake agreement structure for a portfolio of commercial and industrial projects, including state regulatory guidance.
