Orrick’s Josh Rosenkranz, head of our Supreme Court and Appellate practice, is one of the industry leaders featured in Law.com’s “Legal Speak” podcast discussing mentors who shaped their careers. Josh talks about the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Brennan, who inspired his career path and continues to serve as the model for his approach to the law and guiding young lawyers.

In the podcast, Josh, who clerked for Justice Brennan, recalls the “pivotal” impact the justice had on his first big career decision – accepting a job heading a new public defender appellate office in New York. Brennan, Josh said, always told him to “dream big” and encouraged him to accept the position. After establishing the appellate organization, Josh later founded the Brennan Center for Justice, the public interest organization named after his mentor.

“As much as Justice Brennan taught me about being a lawyer, he taught me even more about being a human being,” Josh says. “He just had this boundless capacity for empathy and an uncanny ability to connect with anyone, so when you were with him you felt you were the most important person in the world.”
