Orrick Named to Appellate Hot List 2011

April.29.2011

Orrick was named to The National Law Journal's "Appellate Hot List," which recognized 17 firms that made exemplary contributions to the appellate practice during the past year. Firms must demonstrate significant appellate victories and an impressive overall track record. Extra weight was given to cases in which firms pulled off come-from-behind wins.

In its selection, The National Law Journal highlighted the following Orrick achievement:

Mattel Inc. v. MGA Entertainment

Lead counsel Joshua Rosenkranz (argued) and Annette Hurst. MGA had lost the rights to its Bratz dolls, worth $1 billion per year, was ordered to pay Mattel $100 million in damages, and was denied a stay pending appeal. MGA hired Orrick three days before the appellate merits briefs were due. Mere hours after oral arguments, the 9th Circuit granted a stay and followed up on July 22, 2010, by throwing out the verdict on grounds of errors by the trial judge.
