John Bautista Again Recognized as Client Service Innovator of the Year

June.11.2016

Congratulations to Orrick partner John Bautista, who was honored for the second year in a row as Client Service Innovator of the Year by The Recorder and Legaltech News at the 2016 Innovation Awards. The award recognizes John’s work spearheading Orrick’s partnership with the online payments platform Stripe to launch the startup toolkit Stripe Atlas.

Stripe Atlas enables founders around the world to more easily grow their businesses online. It provides entrepreneurs with a Stripe account, a bank account at Silicon Valley Bank, a tax ID number, incorporation as a U.S. business entity, Amazon Web Services tools and resources, tax guidance from PwC and legal advice from Orrick. Orrick also provided Stripe Atlas with standard incorporation documents to help companies get started on a solid foundation. John led an Orrick research and development team that collaborated with Stripe’s in-house legal team on this project.

According to John, projects like Stripe Atlas and Verbatim, Orrick’s suite of global compliance software, are examples of Orrick’s penchant for pairing law and technology. “I think institutionally we really support and define ourselves by innovation, so the firm is willing to make investments to innovate,” he added.

This is the second time that John has been recognized by the Innovation Awards. In 2015, his collaboration with Y Combinator on the Simple Agreement on Future Equity (SAFE), a more flexible alternative to convertible notes used in capital raising, was recognized as one of the 10 best ideas of the year for solving client challenges. Earlier this year, John was named one of one of 10 Trusted M&A Advisors “clients turn to for strategic counsel and valued industry insights” as part of The Recorder’s Corporate Department of the Year Awards.
