Law360 Names Orrick’s Tech, IP and Bankruptcy Teams as Practice Groups of the Year

December.22.2014

Law360 has selected Orrick’s IP, Tech, and Bankruptcy teams for its annual Practice Groups of the Year list.

Orrick’s Tech team advises companies at every stage of their development, scaling with clients as they make the journey from start-up to market leader. Highlights of the firm’s technology work from the past year include advising Nest Labs, a developer of self-learning home appliances, in its $3.2 billion acquisition by Google, Inc., as well as representing Microsoft in a privacy test case that has drawn wide amicus support in tech industry.

This was the second consecutive year that Orrick’s IP practice was recognized among the best by Law360. During 2014, the team secured a series of critical wins for DISH Network in a case centered on DISH's innovative Hopper Whole-Home HD DVR, as well as an appellate reversal for client Oracle against Google, in which the Federal Circuit overturned a ruling that the thousands of lines of Oracle software that Google copied into its Android operating system had no copyright protection.

Orrick’s achievements in bankruptcy and restructuring over the past year include advising the City of Stockton in one of the largest bankruptcy filings of a US city, including obtaining confirmation of its chapter 9 plan of adjustment in October 2014. The firm has also been advising several of the world’s largest banks in the $6 billion restructuring of the Indiana Toll Road—the largest toll-road debt restructuring to date.

Profiles of each practice will be published in Law360 beginning in January 2015.
