Orrick Partners Honored on Daily Journal's Top IP Litigators List

Recognizing Orrick's Strength Across Patent, Copyright and Cybersecurity Litigation
April.10.2014

The Daily Journal has recognized three Orrick partners on its Top IP Litigators list. This annual list recognizes 75 outstanding IP litigators in California whose achievements for clients have helped advance technological innovation and intellectual property law.

Recognized for her work on behalf of DISH Network in its litigation with the major broadcast networks, Annette Hurst appears on the Top IP Litigators list for the fifth time. In the DISH Network cases, the broadcast networks take issue with certain features available on DISH’s award-winning Hopper DVR, including the Hopper’s AutoHop feature, which DISH subscribers can use to easily skip over all of the commercial breaks when playing back certain recorded primetime network programming. Over the past year, Ms. Hurst and the DISH team have defeated three preliminary injunction motions by the networks, two in the Central District of California, and one in the Southern District of New York. While DISH recently settled with ABC, litigation continues with CBS, NBC and FOX. You can read her feature article here.

Also being honored for the fifth time is Chris Ottenweller, who secured a place on this year’s Top IP Litigators list with his work combating patent troll Intellectual Ventures on behalf of EMC Corp. Oasis Research LLC, a non-practicing entity supported by Intellectual Ventures, alleged that EMC had infringed four of its patents. Mr. Ottenweller and his team were able to prove to the jury that the inventor had former co-workers who made significant contributions to the patents and should have been named as co-inventors. Thus, all four of Oasis’ patents were invalidated. You can read his feature article here.

Gabe Ramsey was recognized for his work combating cyber crime, taking down malicious “botnets” on behalf of Microsoft which earned him a spot on the Top IP Litigators list for a third time. In late 2013, Mr. Ramsey filed a takedown action to turn off the primary command and control of a click fraud botnet called ZeroAccess that targeted Microsoft and its customers and affected more than 2 million PCs. Mr. Ramsey worked closely with Europol, eventually forcing the defendants to disable their malware and cease their malicious actions. You can read his feature article here.

These awards follow litigation accolades from Managing IP, the American Lawyer, the Recorder and Law360 for Orrick’s recent IP and litigation wins.
