Amicus Brief to California Supreme Court in High Profile Case

July.15.2012

A California-based litigation team worked with LatinoJustice (formerly the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund) to write an amicus brief for the California Supreme Court in a case in which an undocumented student who has graduated law school and passed the state bar is now seeking bar admission in California.  LatinoJustice is working on a similar case in NY which is still in its infancy, and that client will be the amicus client for the brief in California.  The California Supreme Court has invited amicus briefs on the question of whether Sergio Garcia, an undocumented immigrant, should be admitted to the State Bar.  The California Committee of Bar Examiners has certified his good moral character and has recommended his admission to practice.  Thus, the California State Bar will also be arguing for his admission.  The team consisted of Los Angeles securities litigation and regulatory enforcement associate Judy Kwan, San Francisco managing litigation associate Sarah Marriott, and San Francisco securities litigation and regulatory enforcement associate Alexis Yee-Garcia, all supervised by Sacramento litigation partner Cynthia Larsen
