Orrick arguably saved both MGA Entertainment, Inc., and EchoStar Corporation from the jaws of death, winning appeals that reversed devastating lower court actions. In the case of EchoStar, which was locked in a patent war with TiVo Inc., it convinced the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to dissolve a disastrous injunction and a $400 million award. When the parties settled soon after, EchoStar's stock jumped $2 billion. Defending former Countrywide Financial Corporation president David Sambol, it reached a favorable settlement of fraud charges with the Securities and Exchange Commission. And it dealt Tessera Technologies, Inc., a rare defeat at the International Trade Commission, winning a ruling for Acer Incorporated that it didn't infringe Tessera's patents.
