In this edition of the Chambers German law and practice guide on Technology, Media and Telecoms (TMT), Christian Schröder and Tobias Lantwin discuss current and potential regulations in various fields of TMT in Germany and the European Union.

These include possible and existing German laws and regulations from different areas of data protection law, as well as possible future regulation of metaverses in relation to data protection and cybersecurity, the digital economy and its main challenges.

In addition, the article looks at AI and Big Data and the legislative proposals at the EU level that could be relevant for the German jurisdiction. It also addresses the Internet of Things (IoT) and the question of how distribution must be approved by the respective media institutions.

The Telecommunications Act (TKG), which implemented the regulations of the European Electronic Communications Code (EECC - Directive (EU) 2018/1972), is also outlined. Further, the challenges of technology contracts, trust services and digital companies are described.
