Video: Recent Developments Affecting Taxpayers and their Representatives

July.02.2018

A panel from Orrick's Tax Advocacy Group discusses issues that continually permeate audits and investigations, recent developments in the law, and the new frontier of cryptocurrency.

Topics include:

  • How to protect the attorney-client privilege during audits and investigations
  • The impact of the Supreme Court’s ruling in South Dakota v. Wayfair, which now permits states to require out-of-state retailers with no physical presence to collect sales tax
  • Whether the IRS will continue to bring obstruction of justice cases against taxpayers in light of the Supreme Court's ruling in Marinello v. United States
  • Issues arising from electronically filed tax returns, such as those raised in Haynes v. United States
  • The IRS' position on the tax implications of transactions involving cryptocurrency

The panelists are members of Orrick's Tax Advocacy Group who have decades of experience representing taxpayers and accountants in all phases of civil and criminal tax litigation, including audits, investigations, trials and appeals.

This video was recorded at an Orrick Breakfast Roundtable event on June 28, 2018.
