International Trade Partner Discusses Impact of EU Lifting of Syrian Oil Embargo

Law360 | May.08.2013

This article, about the impact of the European Union lifting its oil embargo against Syria, quotes international trade and compliance partner Harry Clark.

"There are a number of ways that a company could find itself covered by both the U.S. and EU regimes. It is critical that any given company would need to think carefully about compliance with both regimes," Clark stated. "I don't think there's been any guidance from the U.S. government to sort of dovetail with European action.”

He also added that ultimately, any European company thinking about doing oil business with the Syrian opposition is going to have to closely examine the EU and U.S. sanctions and legally assess whether its transactions are covered by the respective regimes.
