Orrick’s Global Japan Practice is hosting a series of “Orrick Library” seminars to explore legal issues in various fields in Japan as well as the United States, Asia and Europe. The next seminar will be held on Thursday, November 8 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
Following the success of the International Mock Arbitration and Mediation Event on May 25 this year, co-hosted by Orrick, the Ministry of Justice (Japan) and The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Japan Chapter (CIArb), we would like to invite you to the screening of one of the filmed scenes featuring the procedural hearing, followed by live comments and discussion on key practical issues by the speakers.
Charles Adams, Global Head of Orrick’s International Arbitration Practice based in Geneva, Charles Allen, partner in Hong Kong office and Vanessa Liborio, partner in Geneva office, will be joining live by video and participate as commentators, giving you the opportunity to answer your questions. Yoshihiro Takatori (Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association), Head of Orrick Japan Practice, will also be guiding through the session and offer additional perspective and explanations in Japanese if needed.

Charles C. Adams, Jr., is the former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States to the Republic of Finland (2015-2017) and Global Co-Head of Orrick's International Arbitration Practice Group based in Geneva.
Charles' experience spans four decades at the highest levels of international dispute resolution, in more than 300 international arbitration proceedings as counsel and chairman or party-arbitrator in arbitral fora all over the world.
Charles also has 10 years’ membership on the Board of Trustees of the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC).
Vanessa Liborio Garrido de Sousa, Co-Leader of the Geneva office, is a multilingual arbitration lawyer with over 20 years of experience focusing on complex, high-value disputes involving major infrastructure construction projects, consortia and joint venture agreements, sales of goods, collateral management agreements, insurance coverage and consultancy agreements.
Vanessa has acted as counsel in numerous international arbitration proceedings before the ICC, LCIA, the Swiss Arbitration Centre and other international fora and subject to a variety of procedural and substantive laws (including English, French, Italian, Qatari, New York, Mexican, Swiss and Tunisian law). Vanessa's experience spans a variety of industries including construction, life sciences, food and beverages, financial services, insurance and aviation. Most recently, Vanessa has conducted an arbitration on behalf of a sub-contractor involved in the construction of part of an international airport and was successful in representing a Swiss not-for-profit foundation supporting advanced clinical research in rare pediatric diseases. Vanessa has also represented parties in setting aside proceedings before the Swiss Supreme Court and regularly acts as party-appointed arbitrator, sole arbitrator of chair in arbitrations worldwide. In addition to her activities in the field of arbitration, Vanessa regularly provides advice to clients on Swiss substantive law, particularly in contract law.
Prior to joining Orrick, Vanessa practiced for Swiss and international firms based in Geneva and Miami.
Shinsuke Yakura is the Office Leader of Orrick’s Tokyo office and head of Orrick Tokyo’s Complex Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group, and Intellectual Property Group. He has broad experience in handling cross-border litigation, arbitration, intellectual property and compliance matters.
His practice focuses on intellectual property, antitrust, product liability, medical and pharmaceutical, and other commercial disputes for both domestic and foreign companies. He actively engages in cross-border litigation and arbitration, and draws on his extensive knowledge and experience from various countries.
In regards to intellectual property, Shinsuke has represented numerous companies in patent infringement litigation involving a wide range of technologies related to electric devices and industrial machinery. He has also handled other IP-related issues such as trademark, copyright and right to publicity. He is a qualified patent attorney (Benrishi) in Japan.
Recently, he has been involved in business and legal issues related to artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and big data; he also acts as the Asia representative of Orrick’s Global AI Working Group.
Consistently providing strategic advice from a global perspective, he is also actively involved in bribery regulations including FCPA and UKBA, antitrust and competition law, cartel, fraud and compliance investigations.
He also advises in mergers and acquisitions, licensing and other transactional matters.
