Our training curriculum will help you develop legal and business skills as you go.

Training is one of the things you count on most from your firm.

You’ll have access to the best thinking both within Orrick and in the profession on substantive legal issues and skills, becoming a business advisor, planning your career and working in teams. We offered over 350 courses last year, and seven intensive learning academies and bootcamps, where our associates step off the playing field for days-long, intensive case-study style learning. We believe it’s important to keep growing both professionally and personally so we also offer workshops in leadership, teamwork, and even mindfulness.

Each time you advance to a more senior associate role, you’ll attend an academy focused on the business and client service skills you will need. We offer dedicated academies for summer associates, new associates, managing associates and senior associates. The Senior Associate Academy is a weeklong, case-study-style mini MBA program. We also offer a Trial Academy for our senior litigation associates. You’ll come away from the academy experience with a new tool kit of skills and closer connections to your colleagues. Our Bootcamps are focused on depositions and motions practice that help our litigators be “trial ready.” We also have practice group bootcamps for lawyers working in the Technology Companies Group or in IP. In addition, every other year you’ll attend a retreat with your business unit – an opportunity for more training and networking with your team. The faculty for these programs includes Orrick partners, Orrick clients, professors and business coaches.

Our associates return from academies and bootcamps with insights and skills they can put into practice immediately. An associate who attended a recent Depositions Bootcamp told us, “The actors, real-life financial experts, and partner feedback elevated the training program to a simulated real-world deposition experience.” Another commented, “Seeing the variety of styles and approaches gave me confidence that I could cultivate my own effective style.”

Shadowing senior lawyers is another great way to learn – whether you’re observing cross-examinations or sitting in on a negotiation. So we give you full credit for time you spend shadowing more senior lawyers on your team.

“My biggest take-away from the deposition bootcamp was that as long as you incorporate certain basic strategies into your deposition, virtually any style can be effective. Seeing the variety of styles and approaches gave me confidence that I could cultivate my own style and still be effective.”

“The Senior Associate Academy is one of the many things that sets Orrick apart from every other firm. Senior Associates are asked to do a fairly deep dive into what being a “trusted advisor” means, while juggling a dozen other responsibilities. Each year, they pull it off in a way that really speaks volumes about our team and their capabilities.”

"I learned so much and it made me feel that the firm values me. I loved meeting my colleagues from other offices and discussing our challenges, our strengths, and the firm in general.”
