Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has divested minority interests in the Pentland Floating Offshore Wind Farm in Scotland to the National Wealth Fund Limited, Great British Energy Group Limited and Scottish National Investment Bank plc.

The buyers have each acquired initial minority and are committed to provide funding to the project through development and construction, up to a total commitment of £50 million each.

Orrick advised CIP on the transaction. The team previously advised on the CIP’s acquisition from Hexicon AB of a controlling interest and on CIP’s disposal of a minority interest to Eurus Energy.

THE COMPANY

CIP is the world’s largest dedicated fund manager within greenfield energy investments, managing 13 funds. To date it has raised approximately €33 billion for investments in energy and associated infrastructure from more than 200 international institutional investors.

THE IMPACT

Once operational, the Pentland offshore wind farm, located 7.5km off the coast of Dounreay in Scotland, will provide clean energy for almost 70,000 homes, servicing approximately 65% of the homes in the Scottish Highland Council region.

The project is majority owned by CIP and will use innovative technologies to help accelerate the industrialisation of floating offshore wind (FLOW) while delivering significant benefits to the local economy. More than 1,000 jobs are expected to be created and supported throughout its construction and operation.

"Pentland is a leading floating offshore wind project of scale and the lessons learned from this project (including as regards technological innovation, industrialisation and supply chain development) have the potential to greatly strengthen the floating offshore wind sector as it continues to mature,” said Evan Stergoulis, Orrick partner. “The Orrick team is delighted to have advised CIP on this exciting new partnership and to once again be involved in a first mover transaction in the global energy transition space".

THE TEAM

The Orrick team was led by Evan Stergoulis and was composed of David O’Donovan and Philippa Bourke, with support from Ravinder Sandhu, Simon Folley, Jonathan Rosen and James Labovitch.
