Law360 Features Orrick as a Sports & Betting Practice Group of the Year

Law360 today highlighted Orrick’s groundbreaking work as a Sports & Betting Practice Group of the Year in this feature, which observed that we “continued to be a key architect of state-by-state legalization of sports betting” in the aftermath of a 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowing states to permit gambling on sports.

The publication also noted the growth of the firm’s work in the sports industry, including our role as national counsel for the NCAA in concussion litigation.

“Orrick has been looking to expand its influence in the industry with more than two dozen attorneys across multiple practice areas advising sports and betting industry clients, particularly with its public policy group, which has the firm once again at the center of legislation to legalize sports betting and daily fantasy sports,” Law360 wrote.

Among other efforts, the article cited our work on behalf of Major League Baseball, the NBA, the PGA Tour and fantasy sports industry in shaping sports betting legislation in states around the country.

Jeremy Kudon, co-chair of Orrick’s Public Policy Group, told the publication: “Our goal is to continue to build out and to become truly a destination firm for leagues, teams and operators and other entities in the gaming space that of course touch on sports.”

Partner Will Stute, who heads the NCAA concussion litigation, discussed the continued growth of our sports practice. “I think the synergies between all of that [sports betting legalization] and some of the work we have done creates a compelling story to the marketplace about us being already a significant player in the sports space,” Will told Law360. “So for 2020 and 2021, we are looking to, to use a betting analogy, double down on our strength.”

Last month, we added partner Ed Bedrosian, the top gaming regulator in Massachusetts, to our public policy team to serve as head of the firm’s gaming regulatory practice.
