A former Ninth Circuit and California Supreme Court law clerk, Charles specializes in high stakes appeals and dispositive motions.

Charles represents clients in federal and state appellate courts. His work spans a wide range of subject areas, including class actions, bankruptcy, administrative law, international litigation, and labor and employment law.  Charles is also a fellow at Stanford Law School, where he writes on issues in constitutional law, administrative law, and civil procedure.

Before joining Orrick, Charles served as a law clerk for Judge William A. Fletcher of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and Justice Goodwin Liu of the California Supreme Court, and as an associate at another global law firm.

Charles has published commentary in the fields of civil procedure and administrative law, and his work has been the subject of federal government focus groups.
