Tech Companies Boost IP Strategies Through Orrick Taiwan Seminars

May.16.2016

Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe recently held two seminars in Taiwan focused on U.S. IP litigation and licensing strategies for business leaders, legal counsel and IP managers. The seminars were held in coordination with the National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) School of Law, which hosted the seminar in Hsinchu. The events in Hsinchu and Taipei shared the perspectives of leading attorneys, judges and in-house counsel on the latest developments in IP litigation and licensing and reflected the depth of our IP capabilities and our presence in the Taiwan legal market.

The seminars drew over 300 attendees from Taiwan-based and multinational technology companies, including MediaTek, Corning, UMC, RealTek, AU Optronics, TSMC, eMemory Technology, ViewSonic, UPI, Lenovo, Elan Microelectronics, Pixart Imaging, HTC, Silicon Motion Technology, Chicony Power, Sercomm Corporation, Getac Technology, Delta Electronics, Lite-On Technology, Compal Electronics, TPK Touch Solutions and Foxconn Technology Group.

Feedback from attendees was exceptionally strong. “It is not a typical event or seminar hosted by law firms. It is more like an interactive session in which you can share your own experience on IP developments,” said Emmy Huang (General Counsel of ViewSonic), “it is especially helpful for in-house counsel as they have to deal with various issues and face new challenges on global business and legal operations every day.” HP Lu (Legal Manager at Sercomm) said, “This IP seminar is by far the most educational and in-depth one I have ever attended.”

Topics included the latest trends and developments in U.S. patent law, patent and trade secret litigation, the ITC and post-grant proceedings in the USPTO; the impact of recent FRAND decisions; practice tips for IPRs and CBMs; patent litigation in the Eastern District of Texas; liability that can arise from extraterritorial conduct; and judicial and in-house perspectives on global litigation, protection and management of IP.

The events featured Orrick partners Robert Benson, Neel Chatterjee, Pat Ellisen, Jeffrey Johnson and Xiang Wang, along with guest speakers Judge Faith S. Hochberg (Former US District Court Judge, District of New Jersey), Judge Sung-Mei Hsiung (Intellectual Property Court in Taiwan), Judge Yufeng Han (Former Judge, Beijing Second Intermediate Court, IP Division), Rick Runkel (General Counsel, Synopsys), Wei-Fu Hsu (General Counsel, MediaTek) and Gina Hung (General Counsel, RealTek Semiconductor Corp.).
