National Law Journal Names Orrick to 2021 Appellate Hot List

October.25.2021

The National Law Journal has named Orrick to its Appellate Hot List for the 10th time, recognizing our appellate team for a series of high-profile wins during the year, including securing significant rulings for major companies such as Gilead and Johnson & Johnson and arguing three cases in the U.S. Supreme Court.

This slide show includes a Q&A feature with partner Mel Bostwick, who discusses a major Federal Circuit win for Gilead subsidiary Kite Pharma that reversed a $1.2 billion patent judgment (with co-counsel at Munger, Tolles & Olson and Fish & Richardson) and keys to our appellate success overall. “We focus on telling our client’s story,” Mel told the publication. “It’s important for judges to understand not only what your arguments are, but why they matter—to the client, the broader public, and the evolution of the law.”

Josh Rosenkranz, head of our Supreme Court & Appellate practice, argued the case for Gilead. This past year also included partner Bob Loeb prevailing for J&J in the New Jersey appellate courts, which reversed a $117 million verdict in talc litigation. We also won two U.S. Supreme Court cases last term, Madrid v. Torres and Taylor v. Rojas.
