MTA Launches Transaction to Provide LIRR Passengers With Wireless Connectivity in Penn Station

December.15.2021

Orrick’s Infrastructure team advised Metropolitan Transportation Authority in connection with the extension of cellular voice and data service as well as the implementation of a free public and private-facing Wi-Fi network within the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) concourses, platforms and other areas designated by LIRR in New York City’s Penn Station, North America’s busiest train station. LIRR is the busiest commuter railroad in North America, carrying an average of 275,000 customers each weekday, with nearly 500 of the LIRR’s daily trains originating or terminating at Penn Station.

The deal is part of the Penn Station rehabilitation project, which involves the redevelopment and renovation of Penn Station and the surrounding area. The new Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity comes at no cost to the MTA, which will receive revenue from the project.

Our team was led by Vincent Casey and Victoria Boyne and included Dan Eliades and Sara Forden.
