Orrick co-sponsored the second Global Legal Hackathon this past weekend, collaborating with the Global Legal Blockchain Consortium, Integra Ledger, Financial Times and others on a worldwide event designed to develop cutting-edge solutions in the delivery of legal services. Orrick, a founding member of GLBC, hosted events in our San Francisco and New York offices.
The Global Legal Hackathon enlisted more than 6,000 participants in 47 cities across two dozen countries, the largest event of its kind. The event engages law schools, law firms and in-house departments, legal tech companies, governments and service providers to the legal industry globally, joining forces to innovate in the legal industry.
This year’s event also joined forces with the Global Rise of Women in LegalTech (GROWL), a new initiative to support women leaders in legal innovation. The San Francisco and New York hackathons included all-women teams along with mentors from GROWL.
For the second year in a row, Orrick associate Zac Padgett was part of a winning team in San Francisco which advanced to the next round of the Global Legal Hackathon. Their team designed an app called “OurTerms” to extend beyond contract automation and allow end users to operationalize key actions needed over the course of a contractual relationship. The second round of the hackathon takes place on March 15, and those winners advance to the final round and gala on May 4.
The San Francisco event attracted a prominent group of judges, including Angelo Aratan, vice president of Digital-Assets Strategy at JP Morgan Chase; Roland Vogl, executive director of CodeX, the Stanford Center for Legal Informatics; Lawrence Lee, Senior Corporate Counsel at Coinbase; and Alison Brunner, CEO of the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley.
Orrick partner Glynna Christian, Chief Innovation Officer Wendy Butler Curtis and Chief Client Officer Catherine Zinn were instrumental in organizing the hackathon events, along with Amy Huang, Ally Auth and Manyee Chow.
