ABA Selects Orrick for 2017 Pro Bono Publico Award

August.14.2017

Orrick is honored to receive the 2017 Pro Bono Publico Award from the American Bar Association – an award that focuses on service to the poor, more than 80% of whom lack access to a lawyer in U.S. civil cases.

“We continue to experience a crisis in America when it comes to access to justice for the poor. We have a duty to contribute to solving that problem and are honored to work with so many committed community partners. We thank the ABA for this recognition and for its ongoing work on this issue,” said Orrick Pro Bono Counsel Rene Kathawala.

Orrick is also grateful to the longtime community partners and clients nationally who nominated the firm, including the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the Justice & Diversity Center of the Bar Association of San Francisco, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, Kids in Need of Defense and the City Bar Justice Center in New York.

The award was given at the ABA Pro Bono Publico Luncheon on August 12, where this video was shown about Orrick’s pro bono impact, including our work with the Homeless Advocacy Project of the Justice & Diversity Center, the Center for Reproductive Rights, Legal Momentum, Accion and GirlTrek, among others.

In 2016, over 90 percent of our U.S. lawyers exceeded The American Lawyer’s 20-hour pro bono standard, and we ranked #9 in both the US and internationally for pro bono contribution, according to The American Lawyer.
