Suman's practice focuses on the development and procurement of renewable energy and infrastructure projects, with particular depth in project documentation for battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar, and traditional infrastructure (procured under P3 arrangements) across Australia and the United States.
Suman represents developer and owner side clients in the development and procurement of large-scale renewable energy and infrastructure projects. His practice spans the full project lifecycle, from risk allocation and project structuring through to financial close, with a particular focus on battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar and transmission infrastructure, and traditional infrastructure procured under public-private partnership (P3) contractual structures.
Prior to joining Orrick, Suman spent six years in the Energy & Infrastructure practices of Ashurst and Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, and as a Senior Associate at NSW Treasury's Infrastructure and Structured Finance Unit. During that time, he developed a strong track record advising on some of Australia's most significant energy storage and transport infrastructure transactions.
In the renewables space, Suman has advised on the project development documentation for multiple utility-scale BESS projects and Solar projects across the APAC region, including the 850 MW Waratah Super Battery in New South Wales, the 205 MW Brendale Battery in Queensland, the 200 MW Bungama BESS in South Australia and the Pukenui Solar farm in New Zealand. His work on these projects has spanned supply, EPC, and balance of plant contracts, as well as bespoke offtake arrangements.
In the traditional infrastructure space, Suman has advised the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) on the procurement of Phase 1 of the I-285 East Express Lanes Project, a major P3 transaction in Georgia delivered under a concession model.
Suman holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) from the University of New South Wales. He is admitted as an attorney in the State of New York and to the NSW Supreme Court and the High Court of Australia.
