THE TRANSACTION

Orrick has advised Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) on its investment in Bute Energy as part of its partnership with Windward Energy (Windward). As part of the transaction, CIP (through its flagship fund) has assumed a significant minority position in Windward's portfolio development company, Bute Energy Limited (Bute), and will invest approximately £600m in renewable energy projects (including onshore wind farms) under development by Bute in Wales. CIP will also continue with its existing investment in Bute's sister company, Green Generation Cymru, which is developing the grid network in Wales.

THE IMPACT

The Bute portfolio consists of projects at various stages of development. In total, the portfolio is expected to have an installed capacity of over 2GW by 2030, making a substantial contribution towards meeting the renewable energy targets of the Welsh Government (including 25% of the Welsh Government’s target for 100% of the nation’s annual electricity consumption to come from renewable sources by 2035) and the net zero carbon objectives of the UK Government (including contributing up to 18% of the new UK Government’s target of doubling onshore wind by 2030).

Orrick partner Simon Alsey said, “We are delighted to support Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners in their strategic investment and significant contributions to the UK's net zero carbon objectives. This collaboration underscores our commitment to driving impactful change through innovative legal solutions.”
